How Steve Ballmer and Microsoft Can Turn Around The Image Decline

Article by Nerses Ebrahami of Expert Fortran

Recently, David Einhorn suggested that Steven Ballmer should step down from the position of CEO of Microsoft, and not only have journalists created hype around this statement, the employees at Microsoft on whether Steve Ballmer should leave.

Other neutral observers are of the opinion that his record in leading Microsoft has not been very good since stock prices have plummeted since the time he took office in 2000. And if that’s not enough, one of the two products (MS Office and Windows) has also lost ground in the market under his watch, thanks to the Vista disaster. To make matters worse, the presentations that Ballmer make people cringe and which is the reason why David Einhorn brought up this matter in the first place.

Most of these issues are reasons why people think that Microsoft has lost its talent to upcoming companies while also losing its tag as the market leader, and is instead, following other companies at this point.

Now since Ballmer cannot be fired unless shareholders get tired of the share prices hovering between $ 24 and 30, here are some steps by which Microsoft can revamp their image:

#1: Encourage the growth of stock prices by not only communicating recent wins such as the acquisition of Skype, the success of Windows 7 and the large return on investment in Facebook but also by paying higher dividends to its shareholders.

#2: Avoid the debacle that happened with Vista, and improve Microsoft Office and Windows products to exceed the expectations of their customer again.

#3: Ensure that Steven Ballmer’s presentations are crafted well and rehearsed well in advance to keep the audience engaged.

#4: Hire the best the talent that is available in the market today, and retain them by offering them the best performance incentives.

#5: Ensure that the partnership with Nokia works out well while also integrating Skype with Microsoft without inconveniencing the current users of this product.

New Search Feature For App Engine SDKs, Announces Google

In latest developments, Google has recently informed its users through its blog of a new search feature that can be used to build notification, to filter, or to monitor services if you use the Python Software Development Kit for Google’s cloud platform App Engine.

Since the Google App Engine offers developers the option of hosting and building cloud-based applications on the very same systems that Google uses to power its own offerings in the form of applications, this development is no doubt useful to thousands of developers around the world who use the App Engine SDK for either Java or Python.

Also known as the Prospective Search API, it provides developers with the ability to search for queries on live data, which according to Google helps them find what they are looking for in real time as opposed to running searches by using search engines.

One of the best places where Prospective Search API can come in handy is when applications need to look for the latest updates on social media sites.  This is where its ability to analyze, filter, monitor, and notify developers of updates will be of great use.

Google has also said that Python and Java SDK have been updated so that developers can run their own quality checks on the written code without having to rely on App Engine production services from now on.  Also, users can now send multiple requests altogether.

And while these SDKs can be downloaded from Google’s site, developers should be aware that these App Engine SDKs are still under development.

Basics Of PHP

PHP originally meant “Personal Home Page” in 1995, although now it is generally understood to mean “PHP, Hypertext Processor”. PHP was initially developed to enable interactive web and it has come a long way since its inception. PHP is also an open source high level language, which means it is free and more human friendly than other languages such as Pascal, Python or C.

In order to run PHP you will need to install a webserver such as Apache and a database like MySql. You can easily achieve this by installing software such as WAMP server that will provide you with the development environment required on your laptop or desktop. You need to have a webserver because PHP scripts are executed on the server and not on the client machine. Once you have the webserver or WAMP server set up on your computer you can start coding PHP using a text editor or a more advanced editor that provides PHP support. PHP can be embedded in to basic HTML pages allowing dynamic and interactive content.

PHP also works on the basis of tags and the opening tag is always <?php and the closing tag is ?>. You can learn the basic coding syntax by browsing the many tutorials and guides online. PHP can be used to make your website’s interactive content faster, include forms and save data to a database, enhance security and design and develop your website around a system architecture.

Adobe Releases New Open Source Projects

Earlier this month, Adobe released two new projects to help the open source community utilize flash technology more effectively. The first of these is the Open Source Media Framework, which allows developers to more effectively use flash technology in their media players. The second is the Text Layout Framework, a tool that helps developers use flash to create more advanced methods of displaying text.

As these are open source projects, their source code is available for free at the following web pages:

The Open Source Media Framework:

http://www.opensourcemediaframework.com/

The Text Layout Framework:

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/textlayout/

The Open Source Media Framework, formerly known by codename Strobe, provides developers with the tools they need to provide advanced playback and navigation controls. In addition, it includes features such as plugins for tracking user data and advertising.

The Text Layout Framework allows developers to create more visually appealing typographic layouts and effects to Flash presentations. Working in conjunction with the next text engine in Flash Player 10, the Text Layout Framework allows developers to flow text around images and across columns, while also offering support for vertical and bidirectional text.

These releases will likely further solidify Adobe’s dominance of the online media market. By working more closely with open source developers, Adobe will be able to ensure that as usage of open source software increases, they do not lose their market share of online content. In addition, Adobe has been attempting to reach more users by providing flash technology to cell phones and other mobile devices.

Sales Tax for Software?

By SUBHASIS BANERJEE The West Bengal Finance Act 2001, has brought computer software under the tax net from 1 August 2001. This is an attempt to cope with the cash crunch without creating the basic environment for collection of tax. The basic principles of taxation (Adam Smiths canons of taxation) are absent. It is not so easy to collect revenue by just adding a new entry to the Schedule.
